Delta Asia Volunteering: “Recycling Experience Trip in Wet Market”

Miss Lai-chong AU, CEO of Delta Asia Financial Group, led a group of colleagues to Shek Kip Mei Wet Market on 8 August to participate in the Food Friend Action – Recycling Experience Trip in Wet Market organized by the People Service Centre. Through collecting the edible surplus food from wet markets and redistributing to those in need, the activity aims to reduce food waste while supporting the community.

Before the activity started, representative from the People Service Centre gave a brief introduction to the colleagues. According to the 2023 Hong Kong Poverty Report, 20 out of every 100 people are living in poverty. By collecting and redistributing edible surplus food from the wet market, the activity can help alleviate the living pressure of those in need.

The colleagues were divided into three groups and went to different stalls in the wet market to collect the food. The harvest that evening was fruitful, vegetables, fruits, eggs, udon, and tofu pudding were collected. Everyone worked diligently to sort, categorize, and redistribute the 148 kilograms of food collected. The colleagues also chatted with the local residents, gaining first-hand understanding of the living conditions and daily challenges faced by the grassroots community.

The activity was wrapped up with a fruitful debriefing session. The colleagues actively shared their thoughts and feelings. Everyone thought it was a highly meaningful activity through which they all gained a more concrete understanding of the food’s preciousness. By sharing the edible surplus food, they also deepened their understanding of the living conditions of the grassroots residents. This activity not only helps reduce food waste, but also allows colleagues to experience the art of giving within the community.

We will continue to reach out to the community, understand the needs of different strata, and remain committed to contributing to community welfare.
